How to Set Up Streaming on an LG Smart TV in 2026

On an LG Smart TV, connect to the internet, open Apps or LG Content Store, install your service’s supported app and sign in. Then check a program with sound and subtitles. Your webOS version and country affect the menus and apps you see, so keep the exact TV model handy.

What you need before starting

Gather your LG remote, the home network password, LG account details and the login for the streaming service you intend to use. Check the TV model and installed software in its information menu or manual. “LG Smart TV” covers different generations with different app support.

Confirm that your chosen service lists your model or webOS generation as supported in your country. An app available on a phone or a newer television may not be offered on this screen. If you are comparing platforms first, visit the device hub.

This walkthrough focuses on ordinary streaming apps and home-network setup. If you already use a supported independent player, our LG IPTV player guide explains the separate account and player checks.

Check your internet and connect the TV

Test another device on the same home Wi-Fi before opening the TV’s settings. If it also cannot connect, investigate the router or internet connection first. Avoid using a phone’s mobile data as evidence that the home network works.

  1. Press Settings on the remote and open All Settings.
  2. Find the Network options. On many newer webOS versions, they are under General, then Network; an Internet Connection submenu may appear.
  3. Open Wi-Fi Connection, choose your home network and enter its password.
  4. Wait for the connection result, then open an online app to verify access.

Consult LG’s connection instructions if your menus differ. Older sets may group these settings under Connection. Read the status screen to see whether the TV reaches the router and internet; do not repeatedly retype a correct password when the whole home is offline.

Find streaming apps in webOS

Press Home and look for Apps or LG Content Store. The name and layout depend on the software version. Use the search function to find the streaming service, then inspect its listing and publisher before choosing it.

LG’s app installation guide illustrates the different store layouts. If no matching app appears, check model and country support with the publisher. A missing listing is not automatically a network fault.

Do not choose a similarly named app merely because its icon looks familiar. Check the official service website for its supported TV app. If the required app is no longer available for your model, compare a supported external player using Smart TV vs Fire TV.

Install or open a compatible app

Select the service’s app listing and choose Install, or launch it if already present. Complete the LG account prompt if requested, read the applicable agreements, and allow the download to finish. Then open the app from the home screen.

LG’s Content Store guidance explains account and installation requirements. Downloading an app does not mean its paid programs are included. Keep the store account and content subscription separate when reviewing any purchase screen.

If installation stops, check whether another TV app can use the internet and whether storage is available. Removing an unused app may be useful, but confirm which app you are deleting and recover important login information first. Retry one installation rather than starting multiple downloads.

Sign in and configure your profile

Use the streaming app’s own account screen. You may enter an email and password with the remote or authorize the TV through a short code on another device. Follow the exact address shown by the official app and keep that code private.

Select your usual profile and test a title included in the subscription. If an app offers a new subscription even though you already pay, check its sign-in route and billing provider before subscribing again. Some account arrangements use a specific provider-login option.

Where an authorized service uses a separate compatible player, enter only its documented fields. The LG account password is not the streaming provider’s password. A player fee and a content subscription may also be separate purchases, so establish what each payment covers.

Wi-Fi vs Ethernet for an LG TV

A wired connection is worth comparing when the router is nearby and the television has a LAN port. Connect a suitable network cable and check the TV’s wired connection status. Replay the same title without changing its quality to make the comparison useful.

Wi-Fi remains practical when a cable would be awkward. Put the router in a clear position rather than behind large metal objects or inside a closed cabinet. On compatible equipment, compare the available bands from the TV location; a phone’s strong signal does not measure the television’s connection.

Choose the arrangement that sustains your normal viewing. A network adapter should be purchased only after checking support for the exact television. An Ethernet port’s advertised maximum and the speed of your internet subscription describe different parts of the route.

Recommended internet speed and picture quality

Use your streaming provider’s published requirements as the starting point. For example, Netflix recommends at least 3 Mbps for 720p, 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K on a stable connection. Other services and live formats may need different capacity.

Allow for the rest of the household. A second stream, game download or video call shares the connection. Use the HD and 4K speed guide to interpret a test made near your TV during normal viewing hours.

For better video quality, check the app’s data-saving and automatic quality options. Confirm that the title and subscription support 4K or HDR, and that the specific LG app and television support the format. An OLED or 4K label describes the screen, not a promise about every stream. Avoid changing several picture controls while investigating a connection problem.

Common setup problems

The store or several apps will not load

Check TV network status and another device on the same network. Restart the TV normally and check its date and time if sign-in pages report connection errors. Record any error message before changing settings.

One app closes unexpectedly

Try a different app to narrow the issue. Check available updates and storage. Reinstall only after confirming that the app remains available in the store and you can sign back in. Removing an old app without those checks can create another problem.

A title plays sound but no picture

Compare another included title and a supported lower quality. Note whether the issue affects all videos or one format, then contact the publisher with the model, app version and error. A working menu does not prove that every video format is supported.

Work through buffering step by step

  1. Replay the same program and record when the pauses occur.
  2. Pause large downloads or competing streams briefly, with the household’s agreement.
  3. Try a lower app quality setting where available.
  4. Compare wired playback if your setup supports it.
  5. Test another service before deciding whether the TV or provider needs attention.

The buffering guide develops this sequence. A consistent improvement on Ethernet points toward investigating Wi-Fi. Failure limited to one title is more useful information for the content service. Neither observation is a reason to factory-reset the television immediately.

Set audio language and subtitles

Open the player controls during a program and look for audio or subtitle options. Select an available track, then confirm its behavior after leaving and returning to playback. Captions in an app can be independent of the television’s broadcast subtitle setting.

If using a soundbar, compare the TV’s internal speakers when troubleshooting missing dialogue or sound delay. Check the selected output and cable connection before changing surround settings. Choose formats supported by the complete sound system, and test an ordinary conversation scene so synchronization is easy to judge.

Security and software updates

On supported recent webOS versions, open All Settings, Support, Software Update and Check for Updates. LG’s firmware instructions explain model differences. Keep power connected while updating and allow any required restart to finish.

Review app-update prompts separately, along with parental controls and purchase restrictions. Protect both the LG and service accounts with unique passwords. Before passing the TV to another owner, use LG’s account-removal and reset guidance; deleting a home-screen shortcut is not the same as signing out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install the Samsung version of an app?

No. Choose the publisher’s supported LG version. The shared service name does not make software interchangeable between television platforms.

Does my LG TV need an external streaming stick?

A supported built-in app may be sufficient. Consider a stick when you have verified that it solves a missing-app or usability problem.

Why do captions differ between programs?

Language tracks and caption options depend on the title and service. Compare a title known to include the language you need before troubleshooting the TV.

Complete your LG setup

Reopen the app, resume a program and verify sound and captions from the usual seat. Keep the remote routine simple for everyone sharing the screen. Use the setup guide hub for another device and streaming help when network conditions change.
